Hints and Tips

Yes we know some of these are a  bit obvious but it can all help!

PAINTING

-  I’m afraid that preparation IS the key, if you scrimp it won’t matter how good your paint is you won’t get a good finish.

-    when painting fresh or bare plaster you must use either a contract emulsion or a very diluted vinyl emulsion (50:50 water:emul) for the first coat, otherwise the paint may not adhere properly.

-  When painting a complete room, paint the ceiling first, then the walls and then the woodwork (rub the woodwork down first).

-  Always give woodwork a light key before painting (ie rub down with a piece of abrasive).

-  When glossing one must always undercoat first.

-  If in doubt wash walls down with sugar soap prior to painting.

From Dulux:

Question

What is the difference between Dulux Trade paints and Dulux Retail paints?

Answer

The key difference is the consistency of the paint. Dulux Retail paints are ready for use straight

from the can.

Many professional decorators, however, like to thin their paint before use and
so Dulux Trade paints have a slightly different formulation.

In general terms Dulux Trade products are made to a specificaton whereas Dulux Retail products are made to a price. (I think you can see the difference in quality there)

WALLPAPERING

-    It is always a good idea to size the walls prior to papering. If you have been doing any filling then you MUST size first, this helps to eliminate air bubbles forming

-    When trimming paper after hanging cut whilst still wet using a proper pair of wallpapering shears or a sharp knife. With a knife, the snapoff variety is best; it enables you to always have a razor sharp point, this reduces the possibility of the paper tearing. When using a knife use a straight edge and cut on the side away from the wall ie between the straight edge and skirting, if you should get a tear then  it will then be on the paper you have trimmed and not up the wall

-    When using lining paper always allow the paper to soak for 5 – 10 before hanging

-    After lining, once the paper is dry, always caulk round the edges prior to painting

-    When using wallpaper always paint the woodwork prior to hanging the  paper.
